Italian Steak Sandwich

The name of this post might sound deceiving because I don't eat steak, but my sandwich is not made from an ordinary steak. It's made from a seitan steak! Seitan is a vegetarian protein alternative and it might be something fun to try if you've recently made a New Year's resolution to eat meat free more often.

Of course this recipe would also be great made with a regular steak. But they don't call seitan Wheat Meat for nothing, it really is the closest you'll get to vegetarian meat. So maybe giving it a try could be next year's resolution, if you're not ready to give it a go this year?

Italian Steak Sandwiches - makes 4 sandwiches

4 large soft buns
8 oz of seitan or 2 steaks
2 sweet red peppers, sliced
1 sweet onion, sliced
1 tablespoons oil
Zest from 1 lemon
1 teaspoon of fennel seeds, crushed
1/4 cup cheddar cheese, thinly sliced with a veggie peeler
1/4 cup of mayonnaise
Salt and pepper, to taste

1. Start by seasoning your steaks with salt and pepper and grill to desired doneness. Let rest about five minutes and then slice into thin pieces.

2. While steaks are grilling, sauté onions and peppers in the oil until soft, about 5 minutes.

3. Lightly toss steak slices with lemon zest and fennel seeds and pile and even amount onto the four bottom buns. Top steak with peppers and onions, followed by some cheddar cheese. Spread the top buns with mayonnaise and sandwich together. Enjoy!

Is anyone wondering how easy it would be to make your own seitan? It's actually surprisingly easy and I'll be sharing a recipe for seitan with you soon.
